About Us

For-ethiopia works to relieve poverty and sickness, to preserve and protect health and to advance education among the people of Ethiopia who are in need.

We aim to do this in a way that is sustainable and helps the people move towards self-sufficiency. We listen to what the local community needs and work with them to achieve their goals. We believe that small development projects can change lives. They increase the capacity of local communities by improving health, increasing educational opportunity and creating employment. They bring communities together to create a better quality of life. Small can be beautiful.

As a small charity, we have the benefit of very low overheads. We do not hire professional fundraisers or rent expensive offices…. Because of this we are able to put more of the money directly to projects to benefit those who need it!

Our journey

For-ethiopia is a small UK registered charity (number 1108526) operating from Bristol.  It was formally established in October 2004, twenty years after the BBC first broke the story of the famine in Ethiopia to the British public’s attention on 24th October 1984.

In October 2009 Professor Alice Roberts kindly agreed to become our patron and has attended many of our events and has raised money through various activities.

Alice is a clinical anatomist and Professor of Public Engagement in Science at the University of Birmingham. She has presented a range of programmes on BBC2 including Coast, Wild Swimming, The Incredible Human Journey, Origins of Us, and Prehistoric Autopsy. She is also to be heard occasionally on Radio 4. She has authored four popular science books about anatomy and human evolution, and writes a regular science column for The Observer.

Health

In the Addis Alem region there are eight rural health posts (clinics).  Each clinic is staffed by a midwife and nurse, however there are no doctors. With no electricity or water supply, each clinic is expected to cater for around 7,000 people.

Education

It is not only access to schools, but the quality of schooling that is vital to maximise the benefits of education to children.  In order to boost the capability of the schools, we have been providing equipment to many of the schools in the area.

Water & Sanitation

Since 2004, four springs have been capped and eleven wells constructed, providing safe, clean water for over 5,000 people. A total of 8 toilet blocks have also been constructed and training days stressing the importance of Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) have been run in these communities.

Donations

As a small charity, we have the benefit of very low overheads. We do not hire professional fundraisers or rent expensive offices.
