Education & Wellbeing
Education is at the centre of our work in the Ejerie region. We focus on supporting children and young people access school, stay in education, and progress into further study or vocational training. Our programs aim to reduce financial and social barriers to learning while improving the quality and inclusivity of education in rural communities.
Due to interventions including supply of desks, tables, books, library resources, latrines and hand washing facilities, the district education office data saw girls enrolment in school increase from less than 25% to 47.42% (Data from 2019).
Increasing Access to Education
We provide direct assistance to help girls and young women remain in education and continue into further learning.
The Underhill Girls’ Scholarship Scheme supports rural girls through secondary education and includes financial assistance, healthcare, menstrual hygiene products, school uniforms, stationery, extracurricular activities, and incentives for strong academic performance. The programme also maintains and develops the Girls’ Training Centre – Toby’s House and Prudence House.
We support continuity of education from primary school through to higher or vocational education by reducing barriers that prevent students from completing their studies and accessing future opportunities.
We are working towards establishing Learning Libraries and an IT centre to provide books, educational materials, and digital learning resources for underserved communities.
Improving Quality and Inclusion
We work with schools to improve learning environments and ensure education is accessible to all children.
We deliver programmes for children with disabilities to improve inclusive education practices and provide equitable learning opportunities.
Through partnerships with rural schools, we provide essential resources and professional development opportunities for teachers to strengthen teaching quality and improve the overall school experience for students.
Promoting Health & Wellbeing in Schools
We work with schools and local partners to strengthen health and wellbeing so children are able to attend and participate fully in learning.
We deliver menstrual health education, provide hygiene materials and strengthen dignity and awareness programmes in more than 30 schools.
In partnership with health professionals, we support school based health checks including vision, hearing and dental screenings delivered through collaboration with other organisations.
Supporting Vulnerable Children and Sustainable Livelihoods
We provide targeted assistance to children and families facing economic and social hardship. Our Hardship Fund provides financial assistance to orphans, children from low income families, children who must work while attending school, and children whose parents are in prison or living with chronic illness, helping ensure uninterrupted access to education. Through our Skills Development and Employability Fund, we expand vocational and skills development opportunities alongside tertiary education pathways, enabling young people to pursue sustainable livelihoods and long term economic independence.
