Ethiopians sweep the 2014 Great Manchester Run
Congratulations to Kenenisa Bekele and Tirunesh Dibaba who won their respective races in the 10km Great Manchester Run yesterday, 18th May 2014.
Kenenisa Bekele is the current 5,000m and 10,000m world record holder and finished in a time of 28 minutes and 23 seconds, while World and Olympic 10,000m champion Tirunesh Dibaba finished in 31 minutes and 9 seconds.
Both were born in Bekoji, in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia, an area renowned for its athletes including the legendary Derartu Tulu and a stone’s throw from the birthplace of Haile Gebrselassie.
In Ethiopia the Great Ethiopian Run is a 10km road race in Addis Ababa which has been running since 2001 and now attracts over 30,000 participants. It attracts a number of elite athletes but also has a large number of amateur entries. We hope to have some news to announce regarding the Great Ethiopian Run in due course so watch this space!
