First-time parents launch ‘baby sweepstake’ to raise money for Bristol charity.
A Bristol baby is making its mark on the world by helping to fund a water well in Ethiopia – and it hasn’t even been born yet.
Prospective parents Susie and Mark Bowers, who are expecting their first child on 3rd April, have devised the ‘mother of all sweepstakes’ by asking people to guess the time and date when Susie will give birth.
In return for a suggested £10 donation, entrants are in with the chance of winning a pair of tickets to either Coldplay, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Wretch 32 or Keane gigs.
Their efforts have already raised an impressive £1,000 towards their ultimate target of £5,000 for Bristol-based charity For-Ethiopia, which helps to provide water to villages in the African country.
Ethiopia is struggling to cope after the recent drought, thought to be the worst to affect the East Horn of Africa in 60 years.
Heavily pregnant Susie, a 29-year-old writer from Horfield, explained: “Like most pregnant women, I’m quite nervous about going through labour and I wanted to think of things to distract me as I have all those contractions.
“My husband is involved with a local charity called For-Ethiopia that raises money to build wells and educate young women in Ethiopia and I wanted to do something to help fundraise too. Running a marathon was happily out of the question for me, so we decided to launch a sweepstake on when I’d give birth.”
Susie’s husband Mark works for promotions company Metropolis Music, which has kindly donated a pair of gig tickets to the lucky sweepstake winner.
Mark, 32, added: “Everyone says that having a baby is life-changing and I’m so excited that the very first moment we become a family will change the lives of hundreds of people living in a village in Ethiopia too, thanks to everyone’s generosity.
“The idea seems to have really captured people’s imagination – especially as only five per cent of women give birth on their estimated due date, so it literally is anyone’s guess.”
