The Challenge

The Cornish Crabber Challenge is being undertaken by Ros Bennet who plans to sail around the ‘Island’ that is the South of England, in Demelza her Cornish Crabber, to raise money for For-ethiopia, in 2014/2015.

Cornish Crabber Ros Bennet

Outline of the plan.

The trip will begin on the 2nd August 2014 starting in Falmouth and heading to Gravesend via many harbours along the south coast, a distance of approximately 400 miles. I would hope to be in London by the beginning of September and estimate travelling about 100 miles per week.

The Thames

Gravesend to Tower Bridge = 23 miles, mast down before passing under Tower Bridge.

Tower Bridge to Reading = 79 miles and 20 locks.

Kennet and Avon canal

Reading to Bristol = 100 miles and 104 locks. The Thames and Kennet and Avon section will take a month, maybe five weeks. I should be in Bristol by the beginning of October.

Overwinter in Bristol and put up mast again. Leave Bristol when the weather is good enough for the very long passage down to Cornwall. I would hope to begin in April or early May 2015. This section will take about 3 to 4 weeks.

The River Avon

Bristol to Avonmouth = 8

Avonmouth to Falmouth via the Scillies = 268.

Conclusion

I would hope to arrive back on my mooring at St Just in Roseland by May/June  2015 having travelled 843 miles via Penzance, 880 via Scillies.

You will be able to sponsor me at my page on VirginMoneyGiving and I would welcome any offers of free or discounted moorings along the route!

Throughout the journey I will be Tweeting my progress and at some points I will be joined by my trusty dog Nancy Blackett. When she is not with me she will also be Tweeting her thoughts so please remember to follow us both!

Notes for possible crew:

Some vacancies are available for the passage from Falmouth to London Bridge and from Bristol to Falmouth. Crew will need to have good navigational skills in order to be able to co-navigate and will also need to make their own way to and from the boat and pay their own fares. Contributions towards food, wine and mooring fees would be very welcome. Otherwise there will be no other costs involved. If you are interested and would like to find out more please contact me via the contact form.
